Aquarium Overflows
What is an Aquarium Overflow?
An aquarium overflow is an essential part of many saltwater and reef aquarium filtration systems. Its primary purpose is to move water from the display aquarium into a sump located below or beside the tank. Once the water reaches the sump, it can pass through mechanical filtration, protein skimmers, refugiums, heaters, return pumps, and other filtration equipment before being returned to the display.
Most aquarium overflow systems use a weir to collect water from the surface of the aquarium and one or more drainpipes to safely direct that water into the sump. Surface skimming helps remove organic buildup, oils, and debris that can collect along the water’s surface, improving both water clarity and gas exchange.
Aquarium overflows are generally available in two configurations: internal and external.
Internal Aquarium Overflows
Internal overflow boxes are installed inside the display aquarium and are commonly included by the aquarium manufacturer. While these systems can provide dependable drainage, they may occupy a significant amount of space inside the tank. Larger internal overflow towers can also affect aquascaping options and create a more obstructed appearance.
External Aquarium Overflows
External aquarium overflows are designed to reduce the amount of equipment visible inside the display. These systems typically use a slim internal weir connected through the aquarium wall to an external drain box.
By moving most of the overflow system outside the aquarium, external overflows provide additional room for rockwork, coral placement, and livestock while helping create a cleaner, less cluttered display.
Choosing the Right Aquarium Overflow
When selecting an aquarium overflow, it is important to consider:
- The expected flow rate of the aquarium system
- The number and size of the drain lines
- The aquarium’s glass or panel thickness
- The required drilling pattern
- Available space behind the aquarium
- Noise control and drain configuration
- Access for installation and routine maintenance
The overflow should be properly sized for the aquarium and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Correct installation is essential for safe, quiet, and reliable operation.
The Synergy Reef® Shadow® Overflow
The Synergy Reef® Shadow® Overflow is an external, low-profile aquarium overflow designed to provide efficient surface skimming while minimizing the amount of space used inside the display aquarium.
Its streamlined internal weir helps maintain a clean, modern appearance, while the external drain box allows the aquarium plumbing to remain organized behind the tank. The Shadow® Overflow is designed for reef aquarium owners who want dependable water movement without the large footprint of a traditional internal overflow tower.
Whether you are planning a new reef aquarium or upgrading an existing system, a properly selected overflow can improve filtration, simplify plumbing, and help create a cleaner overall aquarium design.
There are multiple styles of overflows and we HIGHLY recommend the Shadow® Overflow
