Product Description

The V3 Shadow® Overflow is the latest version of the SHADOW® overflow system. With over 5 Years of feedback from our customers and 10 years since we invented this style of overflow, we have made some major advancements in our Shadow Overflow Technology! Here are some of the new features:

What is the Shadow® Overflow?

The Shadow® Overflow is a device that is used to divert water flow from your aquarium into your filtration sump. This overflow can be used on any Freshwater, Marine or Reptilian habitats.  There are no limitations on where you can use this overflow system.

Previous owners, please read read the Q&A for the V3 Shadow® Overflow, if you are wanting upgrade information. All of our Shadow V1 to V3 overflows are compatible and upgrade-able.

Features of the V3 Shadow® Overflow

  • Sealed Rear Lid and Rear Box Design – Rear Lid and Rear Box flange makes a watertight seal. This helps completely reduce salt creep formation on the exterior box.  The V3 Rear lid and Rear box is virtually watertight and prevents any water from exiting the box. No other overflow on the market has this capability.
  • 1.5″ Exterior Box Slip Fitting Openings – The 3 x 1.5″ Slip fitting openings in the rear box to allow for better fitting of ANY 1.5″ PVC Pipe or Fitting. This gives you maximum flow with a very small external box footprint. The smallest external box to flow rate ratio available. No big clunky exterior box behind your tank. Just small, sleek and compact.
  • Re-Engineered Polymer Construction – The Rear Box Material has been changed to a proprietary new polymer blend! This new polymer allows you to use ANY type of PVC or ABS glue or primer you choose.  This means that you can use any PVC Cement that you can find locally or have on hand already. It also makes the rear box even more durable than before!
  • Quiet Flow™ Weir design – The Shadow V3 now has a redesigned weir that makes it the quietest front weir box available. We have re-engineered the front internal box and designed an integrated Quiet Flow™ system. This allows for the same high surface skimming capability with no noise from internal flow pumps or wave makers.
  • Upgrade-able! – Our Current Shadow V1 or V2 customers can easily upgrade their overflows to the V3. V2 Customers can easily upgrade without any re-plumbing of your system. And The V3 will be upgrade-able with any future advancements.

    Shadow V3 Overflow Cross Section

100% Injection Molded for the highest quality and most precise fitment! Easy to install and very low profile. Check out the specs of this overflow system. It can be used with as little as 400 gph all the way up to 2500 gph. Tanks from 10 Gallons all the way up to 400 Gallons in size. If you need more flow, just add a second box.

Featuring a removable weir for ease of maintenance and our molded design for fail-safe operation. Our ultra slim design has revolutionized the aquarium overflow and how aquariums get water into their filtration systems. It is a very simple to install, plug and play overflow system. Quiet operation when used to our specifications and tuned properly to your system. Our years of testing and development are what sets our overflow system apart from anything else available.

Designing the overflow –

Being reef hobbyists ourselves, we spent years working on the design of this overflow. We were tired of the same old overflow that took up a quarter of the tanks real-estate and sounded like a toilet flushing. We tested hundreds of variations and options before we came to this design. Our fundamental goal was to create a low profile and quiet internal overflow box, while maintaining the higher flow rates desired by reef hobbyist. We wanted an overflow system that everyone would want to use. Originally, we designed the overflow to fulfill a need for a high flow, quiet, plug and play operation. We built them by hand with flat sheets of acrylic. Using flat sheets for an intricate design like we envisioned was not possible and had limitations. Designing the overflow with 3D software allows us to add features not possible when building it by hand out of flat acrylic. As we moved forward with the design, we wanted to make a product that could be produced for everyone to enjoy. Injection molding was the answer. While it took us a long time to design and manufacture this overflow, it now is exactly where we wanted it to be.   This overflow system was designed by Synergy Reef Systems in the USA!

Manufacturing the overflow –

Injection molding allows us to make every part exactly the same. Every part is molded with the same tolerance and specification. Unlike other hand build models, molding allows the Shadow to be precise in fit and form. We use the highest quality Polycarbonate and ABS in our molding process. Our quality is second to none! There are lots of imitation overflows out there, but ours is the highest quality available, period!

This is a self-install kit. You can drill the tank and install this yourself! Instructions are located here: 16″ Shadow® Overflow Installation Manual

Drilling template is included with the overflow and we recommend you use the template when the overflow arrives to align it perfectly. But if you need the drilling template .pdf it is located here: 16″ Shadow Overflow Drilling Template

Specs:

Up to 2500 Gallon Per Hour Flow Rates! That’s right. With 3 x 1.5″ Drains, this overflow can handle some flow! But if you have a smaller tank, you can use this overflow as well. We have customers using these on tanks as small as 10 gallons.

Locking Removable Weir – The locking weir will not fall off in your tank. ( Also allows you to remove and clean the teeth of the weir)
VTeeth™ Technology, which allows 30-50% more water through, so that larger flow rates can be used
Bulkheads are molded into the Front Overflow Box. Making this a 1 piece design.

Fits aquarium thickness from 1/4″ (6 mm) up to 3/4″ (19 mm)  Glass or Acrylic tanks

Rear Box
16″ x 3.75″ x 7″ Injection Molded Seamless Translucent Black Hi-Tech Polymer
3 x 1.5″ Slip fittings for easy plumbing with standard 1.5″ PVC Fittings
2 x U-Flow™ fittings that allow for compact plumbing

What are some of the key features of the Shadow® Overflow

  • Injection Molded – Our overflow is 100% injection molded. This means that every overflow will be exactly the same. Being injection molded also means no glued seams that can leak, it is truly a “One Piece” design. We are the only company that injection molds this style overflow system. Injection molding  and precision 3D CAD designed components allows us more details and features than flat stock built overflows. Don’t settle for anything less.

OnePieceDesign

  • VTeeth™ – Our new Velocity Teeth allow for an even surface skimming flow into the overflow. This maximizes the surface skimming capabilities of the overflow as the flow rate increases. This also allows us to have a very small water level differential. Injection molded VTeeth™ are smooth without any rough surfaces, this provides a continuous smooth flow.
    VTeeth
  • U-Flow™ Pipes – Now included with every Shadow™ overflow is a set of U-Flow™ pipes. We have designed these fittings to maximize space inside of the outside rear overflow box. These compact fittings are not available off the shelf anywhere else. They allow us to fit our 1.5″ Fittings into such a small space.
    U-Flow
  • 1.5″ Plumbing – Standard 1.5″ plumbing capability. No other compact overflow on the market has the capability to use 1.5″ plumbing on such a small rear box. The 1.5″ can be reduced down to what ever size plumbing your tank requires as well.
  • Water Tight Locking Rear Cover – Our poly-carbonate rear box cover is not just a rectangle piece of material. It is a feature that was specifically designed to have a function and structure. We have designed the rear cover to lock in place when attached. It also features an exclusive channel system to keep water inside the rear box. No other overflow on the market can compare their lids to these!

  • Universal Fit – This will work on any non tempered glass and acrylic tanks from 1/4″ (6 mm) to 3/4″ (19 mm) Thick! Rimless and Plastic trimmed tanks all work!
  • Polycarbonate Construction – The front box and weirs are constructed out of bulletproof poly-carbonate. They are practically indestructible!
  • Locking, Snap Fit Weir – Removable locking weir with our new VTeeth™ for easy maintenance and cleaning. We have designed a simple slide fit that allow for a smooth action when removing the weir in tight spots under the trim on your tank. This means ZERO Clearance is needed to remove the weir when installed under a braced tank! This is a non-magnetic locking weir design that snaps into place.

  • Plumb it to your needs – Rear box allows for various plumbing combinations, including the popular full siphon system. We use our modified version for full siphon. Slip fittings are molded into the overflow rear box. No more bulkheads.

Q. – What tank thickness will the Shadow Overflow work with?
A. – 1/4″ (6mm) to 3/4″ (19mm) Glass and Acrylic Tanks

Q. – What size aquarium will the 16″ Shadow Overflow work for?
A. – This is a great question and has many answers. The size of the aquarium is not what matters, it’s the amount of flow that you plan on running to your tank from your return pump. The 16″ Shadow Overflow can be used on tanks as small as 10 gallons up to tanks as large as 400 gallons. Each 16″ Shadow Overflow can handle up to 2500 Gallons Per Hour! So if you need more flow, just add more overflows!

Q. – Can this be used with freshwater aquariums?
A. – Absolutely! We have thousands of freshwater customers that use the Shadow Overflows. Any aquariums that will be using a Sump under the aquarium will work.

Q. – Why don’t you offer larger front boxes like a 24″?
A. – We have with our extensive testing over the last 10 years (remember we did invent this type of overflow) that longer weirs actually are not efficient and actually can cause stagnant water to form inside the front box of the overflow. The 16″ size is the most efficient at draining with the 2 1.75″ drains in the rear of the front weir to the rear box. It also is a more compact size for your tank so it is less intrusive.

Q. – What is the difference between the 16″ and 20″ Overflows?
A. – The major difference is the 16″ is injection molded. This makes for a much higher quality and durable product. The 20″ is hand built from acrylic and only made to fit on tanks with glass/acrylic thicknesses of 3/4″ to 1.5″. The 20″ Overflows DO NOT fit on tanks with thicknesses less than 3/4″.

Q. – If I need more surface skimming, is a overflow with a longer than 16″ weir better?
A. – NO! This is actually not the case. Most people believe that a longer front weir makes more surface skimming. This is incorrect. Surface skimming is determined by how much flow goes thru the overflow, not the weir’s length. Water flow or Flow Rate is what determines the surface skimming of your overflow. This is determined by the hole size going thru the tank, not how long the weir is.

Q. – Can the front weir (teeth) be removed for periodically cleaning?
A. – Absolutely! The front weir (teeth) are snap fitted into place and easily removed for cleaning. You can also purchase a second one as a spare or to use when cleaning the main one. You do not have to turn your aquarium off when you remove the weir either! Your aquarium will still run perfectly normal when the weir is removed, unlike other overflow designs on the market. The weir is also locked into place so it will not fall off while installed on the front box.

Q. – Do I need to upgrade if I own a previous version of the Shadow Overflow?
A1. – If you own a Shadow V1 with a serial number from 0000-5000, You will need to upgrade the front and rear box for all of the V3 Features. You can also just upgrade the rear box from the V1 to the V3 to get the benifits of the sealed rear box lid and other V3 benefits.
A2. – If you own a V2 with a serial number from 5001 and up, you do not need to upgrade anything. The V2 and V3 components are exactly the same. The only part you would need to make yours a V3 would be the new internal plate for the front weir box. Contact us for an upgrade link.

Best Overflow on the Market!!

Overflow is thoughtfully package all contents arrived in excellent condition. This overflow has an amazing look and a very solid construction, the installation was very straightforward after watching the installation video. I ordered the 35mm drill bit for drilling the holes for the return bulkheads and found that the bit was too small. I would just take that into consideration when adding the 35mm bit. I also installed this on an Aqueon 210 and we had to deviate from the instruction in the video just so slightly, but to avoid this I would recommend the spacer kit. Over all this is a fantastic product and recommend this overall over all other options on the market, I’m very excited to see how it performs!!!!

Superb quality product.

Good day Synergy people.

Hope all is well.

My name is Leo Manchik and I own AquaLab, a high-end aquarium manufacturer out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - From time to time we build our very own internal and external overflow boxes (Glass construction) and one of the products we offer is a hybrid overflow - we used to offer Eshopps Prodigy model till I've stumbled upon your creation... and i would like to inform you that without a doubt, i will no longer by using Eshopp, as i find your product amazing! 5 Stars all day long! In fact, if it is at all possible for your rep to reach out and see if there would be a way for AquaLab to become your rep in Western Canada, if you don't have one at the moment, it would be my pleasure to work with you so that i can sell your application to our clients.

Thank you for your time,

Leo
